Commutator Turning

Commutator turning gives the brush contact surface its final roundness and surface finish. Runout left here becomes brush bounce, sparking and reduced brush life in the finished motor, which is why turning is the process most closely tied to motor lifetime.

Precision turning is the process Bocadar's engineering team describes as its specialty. Machines use three-axis servo feeds and diamond tooling; runout after turning is ≤0.008 mm TIR with a surface finish of Ra ≤0.8 μm, measured between centres.
